Never download a program without first scanning for viruses and always check incoming email before opening an attachment.

Check to see if your virus scanning software is up-to-date. Each month you should update your anti virus software with the latest virus definitions, in order for it to be effective against the latest viruses.

After updating your virus definitions, run a complete scan of your hard drive.

Identify and remove so called spy-ware which are frequently and inadvertently installed on your machine. They are usually distributed with 'freeware' utility programs designed to report back on your buying and surfing habits. They often drain your system's resources (the average computer user unknowingly has more than 30 spyware installed at any one time!).

Install a firewall program to prevent hackers from invading your machine--some are designed to prevent spy-ware programs from invading as well.
